A Season of Growth and Connection

Welcome Spring!

As we delve into a long-awaited spring, I’m reminded of Sam (pictured above with her Grandpa Doug in his garden). Today an inspiring and accomplished young woman in our local community, Sam talks about staying connected and visiting people regardless of their dementia symptoms. Both of Sam’s grandparents have been impacted by dementia, and Sam has fond memories of visiting them regularly. When she reflects on visits with her Grandma Janice, she notes, “I visited her for her, and I visited her for me. For me, she was never gone, she was still there. She might not remember me being there that day, but I know she’d remember the feeling of people visiting.”

This is a powerful reminder of why we continue to grow the StillMe social movement for change and offer invaluable supports to anyone affected by dementia in the Calgary region. I hope you find this spring update as energizing as our team does in sharing it with you.

Craig Senyk and Devin Cooper

A champion for those living with Alzheimer’s

A story of community, music, and shared purpose

When Craig Senyk first encountered the devastating impact of Alzheimer's disease within his own family, he never imagined it would lead him to become one of the most passionate advocates for the Alzheimer Society of Calgary. For over five years, his unwavering support has helped transform countless lives in our community.

The Personal Journey

Craig's voice softens as he recalls watching both his parents battle Alzheimer's disease, the pain still evident in his words. Like many family members thrust into a caregiving role, Craig, along with his brother Ken, found themselves overwhelmed and searching for answers. "I had no idea how to best support them," he reflects. "Alzheimer Calgary can provide people like me with the resources and support we need – something I wish I'd known sooner."

Music's Healing Power

Craig's eyes light up when he describes the transformative power of music he witnessed in his parents' memory care unit.

In 2019, Craig's path crossed with Devin Cooper, organizer of The Ride to Remember – an extraordinary event that beautifully weaves together live music, motorcycles, and hope for those affected by Alzheimer's. What began as a modest fundraiser generating $1,000 has blossomed into a remarkable annual celebration that raised over $50,000 in 2024.

"Whenever music was played, it made everyone smile; almost as if it brought them to life.” - Craig Senyik

Building Community

Craig's commitment to community building runs deep. "When people from different worlds come together around a common purpose of giving, they can have a great time together," he explains with infectious enthusiasm. "The world needs more of that – to celebrate our commonalities rather than fight over our differences."

His love for Calgary shines through in every initiative he supports. The vision of a vibrant, supportive community drives his philanthropic work. As he simply yet powerfully states, "When you invest in your community, it makes it a richer place to live."

A Call to Action

For those seeking to make a difference, Craig offers heartfelt advice: "Find your own community as a way to make this world a better place. Those are the things I care deeply about and I want the world to know about organizations like Alzheimer Calgary, who ultimately make life better for so many. It's not simply an issue of relevance, it's an absolute necessity."

At Alzheimer Calgary, we are profoundly moved by Craig's dedication and generosity. Anyone can create hope and change. Craig didn’t set out to become an advocate for Alzheimer’s support; it is his lived experience that drives his actions to create hope and change for families facing the challenges of Alzheimer's disease.

Community Fundraisers: Ripples of Compassion

We are deeply grateful for the generous community champions who held events in support of Alzheimer Calgary. Grassroots efforts like these not only provide essential financial support, but also spread awareness about dementia care, creating ripples of compassion that extend far beyond the funds raised. Big thanks to all of our community partners who generously raised funds for the cause recently:

StillMe Movement

Look for a fresh new campaign in June, in time for Senior's Week.

We often get questions about what’s considered ‘normal aging,’ so we’ll be shining a spotlight on early signs of dementia. It'll be a creative approach with some practical examples of warning signs, encouraging folks to seek help early on. Become part of the movement and help change the way your community sees and responds to dementia.

Honouring Our Volunteers

The Heart Behind our Support Groups

Our volunteers demonstrate extraordinary compassion, patience, and commitment. Without their selfless service, we simply couldn't provide the critical programs our community depends on.

After losing her mother to Alzheimer's, Heather Ansari took time to heal before deciding to help others facing similar challenges. For the past year and a half, she has been facilitating support groups for families affected by Alzheimer's disease, bringing her personal experience and compassionate approach to each session.

What makes Heather special is her understanding that every caregiver's journey is unique. She describes the support group experience as being "on a bus together, stopping at different places along the way; dealing with unexpected flat tires, but we're all going along together." This philosophy helps participants realize they're not alone, even when their circumstances differ.

"There's so much sharing; so much trust built quickly," Heather notes. "And people may be surprised at how many laughs we have. It's not all heavy and sad. People come away feeling better; confidence and hope are amplified in the group."

"Confidence and hope are amplified in the group." - Heather Ansari, Support Group Facilitator

Rather than finding the role emotionally draining, Heather describes her volunteer work as fulfilling: "It fills my cup rather than draining it. This isn’t your grandparents' support group."

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, we thank Heather and all our remarkable volunteers. Their dedication makes our community stronger and ensures that no one faces dementia alone.

A Fresh Spin on Support Groups

Our newly re-launched support group is a 6-week program where people come together to share insights, learn from each other, and explore practical strategies for dementia care. Groups are led by people who have been in your shoes. Each session is designed to create a safe, understanding space, where you can connect with others facing similar challenges. Following the initial 6-week program, you are invited to join an alumni group for continued support.

“My support group is a safe zone. We all listen with a great amount of respect and help each other as much as we can.” - Arlen, Participant

We strive to create a fun, inclusive, judgement-free, and safe environment for our members.
